The osprey, often referred to as the sea hawk, fish eagle, or river hawk is a magnificent bird of prey found in many parts of the world. It is part of the Pandionidae family and is distinctive for its dark brown head, white underside and mottled brown back. Its diet consists of mostly fish but will also feed on amphibians, reptiles and sometimes small mammals. Ospreys have incredibly powerful talons which help them to grasp their prey and feet that are even adapted with special scales called spicules that act like suction cups to help them grip underwater! They commonly build large nests of sticks near water or in trees making them easy to identify. All in all, the osprey is an impressive animal that has some unique features that set it apart from other birds of prey.
